Afghanistan Launches Four-Day Polio Vaccination Drive
Millions of Young Children Targeted in Nationwide Effort
KABUL – Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health has initiated a critical four-day vaccination campaign aiming to immunize 7.3 million children under five years old against the debilitating poliovirus.
Intensified Eradication Push
The campaign, running from Monday through Thursday, will administer vital anti-polio drops to youngsters across 19 of the nation’s 34 provinces. This intensified effort underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating the virus.
Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, the ministry’s spokesperson, highlighted the importance of community involvement. He issued a direct appeal for tribal elders, religious scholars, and parents to actively support and cooperate with the polio workers carrying out the vaccinations.
“The Ministry of Public Health is striving to combat infectious diseases by implementing all preventive measures; through the polio vaccination campaign, we aim to prevent the spread of polio in Afghanistan.”
—Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health
Globally, polio cases are exceptionally rare, with only a handful reported worldwide in recent years. For instance, Pakistan reported just two endemic cases in 2023, a significant reduction from previous decades, demonstrating the impact of sustained vaccination efforts (Global Polio Eradication Initiative).
Community Engagement Crucial for Success
The success of the campaign hinges on broad public participation and trust in healthcare workers. The Ministry is leveraging community leaders to encourage widespread acceptance of the life-saving vaccines.
