AEW Wrestler and Musician Andy The Butcher Williams Dies at 48

September 6, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Professional wrestler and heavy-metal musician Andy Williams, widely known in the ring as “The Butcher” and on stage as the rhythm guitarist for Every Time I Die, died on Saturday night at the age of 48 after suffering a medical emergency during a match for Enjoy Wrestling in Millvale, Pennsylvania, according to TMZ Sports and POST Wrestling.

In-Ring Medical Emergency and Public Response

According to Pittsburgh-based organization Love Wrestling, Williams collapsed toward the end of the bout. Dispatch audio from a 911 call obtained by Heavy indicated that Williams had hit his head during the match.

Medical personnel rushed into the ring, administered CPR, and used an AED defibrillator before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Witness Rich Fann described the tense moments to POST Wrestling, noting that the crowd, crew, and paramedics worked in unison to clear a path and assist emergency responders. Event organizers subsequently canceled the remainder of the show.

A Dual Career in Heavy Metal and Professional Wrestling

Before carving out a prominent space in professional wrestling, Williams established a lasting legacy in the music industry as the rhythm guitarist for the influential metalcore band Every Time I Die, alongside stints with Atomic Rule. He transitioned into the squared circle in the early 2010s, making his official in-ring debut in 2016 and working extensively across the independent circuit.

In late 2019, Williams made his high-profile debut for All Elite Wrestling, attacking Cody Rhodes alongside The Blade and The Bunny. Over a tenure with AEW that lasted until his contract expired in June, Williams competed against top roster mainstays including Jon Moxley, Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, Eddie Kingston, and Matt and Jeff Hardy. His final televised match for the promotion aired on February 19, 2025, on an episode of Collision against Gabe Kidd, according to Heavy.

Industry Tributes and Legacy

Following confirmation of his passing from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, All Elite Wrestling released a statement via social media honoring his impact. “All Elite Wrestling is saddened to learn of the passing of Andy Williams, aka The Butcher. A trailblazing musician with ETID and Atomic Rule, Williams made a successful transition into the world of professional wrestling and was incredibly respected by his peers both in and out of the ring,” the organization shared.

Colleagues and peers took to social media to express shock and share memories of Williams. Matt Hardy posted on X that Williams was “a kind, funny & deep individual who was an extremely talented musician & wrestler.” Fellow performer Willow Nightingale noted that Williams consistently advocated for her backstage, stating that “he made AEW feel like family even when I wasn’t officially a part of the team.” Wrestler Sammy Guevara added, “For a man his size, with all the tattoos, you’d assume he’d be this monster. But in reality, Andy Williams was always such a kind person.”

As the entertainment and sports communities process the loss of a multifaceted talent who left an indelible mark on both heavy metal and professional sports entertainment, authorities have not yet officially determined the cause of death.
