Alabama’s men’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament Sunday, defeating Texas Tech 90-65 in Tampa, Florida. The Crimson Tide will face No. 1 seed Michigan on March 27 in Chicago.
Latrell Wrightsell led Alabama with 24 points and four rebounds, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-9 from the three-point line. Houston Mallette contributed 15 points and eight rebounds, while LeJuan Watts finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Donovan Atwell scored 12 points for Texas Tech.
The victory comes as Alabama navigates a challenging situation with the absence of second-leading scorer Aden Holloway. Holloway was arrested on March 16 and charged with two felonies related to possession of 2.1 pounds of marijuana, according to the University of Alabama. He has been removed from campus and will not rejoin the team until the university’s office of student conduct completes its investigation.
Alabama dominated the second half, leading by 18 points with 11:55 remaining. Texas Tech attempted to close the gap, outscoring the Crimson Tide 20-14 during a stretch, but Alabama maintained control.
The game marked Alabama’s first tournament win against Texas Tech. The Crimson Tide’s strong offensive performance included shooting 50% from the field overall.
Texas Tech’s leading scorer, JT Toppin, suffered an ACL tear earlier in the season, impacting the team’s performance. Despite the setback, the Red Raiders hoped to leverage Christian Anderson’s shooting ability to advance in the tournament.
Alabama’s star guard, Labaron Philon Jr., previously led the team with 29 points in their first-round victory against Hofstra, shooting 55.5% from the field. His continued strong performance will be crucial as the Crimson Tide progress through the tournament.
