Jack Lowden Marks Cinema Return in Play Filmed During Venue’s Financial Crisis
Actor Jack Lowden will appear in cinemas this month in The Fifth Step, a National theatre of Scotland production filmed at a venue he actively helped save from closure. The film’s release comes as Lowden received an honorary doctorate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) last week, where he previously trained.
Lowden’s involvement with the project took on added importance as filming occurred while the Edinburgh Playhouse, where The Fifth Step was recorded, faced severe financial difficulties. The actor joined a campaign to support the theatre, recognizing its vital role in the performing arts landscape. The play, which features Martin Freeman, centers on a newcomer to Alcoholics Anonymous and his relationship with a sponsor.
“It was a bit bizarre to be back where you trained but it was a lovely honor and to be given the chance to speak to the current students was the best bit as I know exactly what it feels like to be sat there,” Lowden said of his recent return to the RCS.
The Fifth Step will be released to cinemas nationwide on November 27th, presented by Neal Street Productions, Playful productions and National Theatre of Scotland in association with Nica Burns. More data can be found at https://thefifthstep.ntlive.com/.
