Actor Awards Predictions: The Odyssey and John Malkovich Lead the Race
As the entertainment industry navigates the heat of awards season, the early Gold Derby odds for the SAG Actor Awards reveal distinct shifts. Christopher Nolan’s epic film The Odyssey climbs to the top of the leaderboard with multiple predicted nominations, while Digger slips in early ensemble standings amid rising competition.
The Odyssey Leads the Early Leaderboard
Christopher Nolan’s epic film The Odyssey has emerged as the front-runner in the early Gold Derby odds for the upcoming SAG Actor Awards. Benefiting from a star-studded cast and high visibility, the film leads the pack with projected nominations for film ensemble, lead actor for Matt Damon, supporting actor for John Leguizamo, and supporting actresses for both Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton.
Despite this strong showing, prognosticators note that last year’s record haul of seven nominations achieved by One Battle After Another is on track to remain intact. No single film in the current race is projected to exceed that mark, as contenders must secure at least one nomination across all five film categories, excluding the stunt ensemble.
Voting members of SAG-AFTRA face a crowded field of familiar faces and past winners, aligning with the types of roles the guild historically recognizes. While the entire voting body of over 100,000 members determines the ultimate winners of the Actor Awards, a randomly selected committee of 2,500 members decides the initial nominations.
Shifting Fortunes for Digger and Surging Challengers
While The Odyssey solidifies its position, the landscape looks shakier for other high-profile contenders. Digger boasts one of the season’s strongest ensembles, but the film has slipped to No. 5 in the ensemble race. Tracking data shows a 15% drop in standing since the social sentiment embargo lifted.

This dip has opened the door for surging challengers to break into the top five, including La Bola Negra, which is up 6%, and Being Heumann, which climbed 9%. Meanwhile, Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy Wild Horse Nine holds a strong position, drawing predicted recognition for its ensemble alongside star John Malkovich for lead actor and Sam Rockwell for supporting actor.
In the Best Film Actor category, Malkovich holds the top spot, mirroring his standing in early Oscar odds. Matt Damon sits in the No. 2 slot, positioning himself to add to his three previous solo acting nominations from the guild. Tom Cruise occupies the No. 3 slot, though his odds are down 9%; his last nomination from the guild came 25 years ago for Magnolia in 2000. Rounding out the top tier, Ryan Gosling holds the No. 4 spot for Project Hail Mary.
Open Races in Supporting and Lead Actress Categories
The Best Film Actress race features SAG favorite Julianne Moore, who has secured two previous victories and four additional nominations on her own. She looks assured of another nod for The Debut. Competition in the category remains open, with Obsession star Inde Navarrette mounting a strong campaign for her indie hit alongside Olivia Wilde.

Sandra Hüller, who was famously snubbed by SAG for Anatomy of a Fall, is tracking in Oscar odds for Rose and Fatherland, but prognosticators look elsewhere for the guild, placing Being Heumann star Ruth Madeley in the conversation for her portrayal of disability activist Judy Heumann.
In the supporting races, Paul Giamatti can count on a nomination for his role in Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut, marking his fifth career solo nomination from the guild. In the supporting actress category, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton claim the top two slots for The Odyssey, while Olivia Colman secures the No. 4 spot for Elsinore, adding to her history of five solo nominations.
