Almeno Gonçalves, Veteran portuguese Actor, Dies at 66
LISBON, Portugal - Almeno Gonçalves, a prolific actor known for his work across Portuguese film, television, and theater, has died at the age of 66 following a battle with colon cancer.His agent confirmed the news to Lusa agency early Thursday.
Gonçalves’s career spanned decades,beginning with his professional debut at the Comuna Theatre under the direction of João Mota in productions including A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. He subsequently became a mainstay of numerous national companies, including the Teatro Experimental de Cascais, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Teatro Aberto, and Teatro da Cornucópia.
His film credits include roles in Area J (1998), Under the Bed (2003), and A Shot in the Dark (2005). Television audiences recognized him from appearances in series and soap operas such as Cocoa (2025), Love, Love (2021), and Strawberries with Sugar (2003). He is survived by his daughter,Francisca Gonçalves,from his relationship with actress Rita Salema.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports expressed their sorrow at Gonçalves’s passing, describing him as “a dedicated professional” familiar to audiences through ”countless television, theatre and cinema productions.” A wake will be held Friday morning at the Church of Miraflores, in Oeiras.
