Active Volcanoes Global Update: October 16, 2026

October 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Global aviation advisories and regional disaster response teams are tracking a coordinated surge in explosive volcanic activity across the Pacific Rim, Indonesia, and Central America, following a series of sudden ash emissions reported on October 16, 2026.

Ash Plumes Reach Flight Level 140 Across Multiple Regions

In Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the Sheveluch volcano maintained continuous explosive momentum on October 16. The Tokyo VAAC recorded a dense ash plume rising to an estimated altitude of 14,000 feet, corresponding to flight level 140, drifting northwest at 20 knots based on data from 05:20 UTC. Mirroring that altitude on the opposite side of the globe, the Semeru volcano in East Java, Indonesia, generated an identical 14,000-foot ash plume by 15:30 UTC, as tracked by the Darwin VAAC.

Guatemala’s Santiaguito volcano was the subject of a volcanic ash advisory center bulletin. Meanwhile, moderate explosive pulses continued across the Indonesian archipelago. The Ibu and Lewotolo volcanoes both featured volcanic ash advisory bulletins matching activity recorded at the Dukono volcano.

Regional Monitoring Faces Meteorological Obstacles

Dense weather cloud cover has hampered direct satellite observation for several critical systems, forcing monitoring agencies to rely on ground-based webcams and predictive wind modeling. In Guatemala, the Fuego volcano maintained continuous ash emissions visible via webcam at 09:10 UTC on October 16, though satellite imaging was obscured. Similar meteorological obstructions affected the Puracé volcano in Colombia and the Reventador volcano in Ecuador, where continuous emissions are considered probable despite a lack of direct satellite verification.

Further south, Chile’s Nevados de Chillán volcano sustained explosive activity, generating a 12,000-foot ash plume logged by the Buenos Aires VAAC at 12:30 UTC. In the South-West Pacific, White Island in New Zealand produced a 3,000-foot ash plume moving north at 5 knots, monitored by the Wellington VAAC. The Marapi volcano in West Sumatra is among the locations with a volcanic ash advisory center bulletin.
