Ace Frehley, Rock and roll Hall of Famer and founding member of KISS, has died at age 78. The guitarist passed away September 16, 2024, following a battle wiht undisclosed medical issues, his team announced.
Frehley, known for his distinctive guitar playing and stage persona as “The Spaceman,” was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of KISS. He joined the band at its inception in 1973 and remained until 1982, contributing to their iconic image and sound.
“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth,” a statement from his team read. “We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever.”
Following his initial departure from KISS, Frehley formed Frehley’s Comet, releasing two albums. He later embarked on a accomplished solo career, briefly interrupted by a reunion with KISS from 1996 to 2002. known for his aggressive, atmospheric, and melodic guitar style, and his innovative use of “special effects” guitars, Frehley influenced generations of musicians.
Just months prior to his death, Frehley had canceled his tour due to “ongoing medical issues.” He was also recently named a Kennedy Center Honoree by President Donald trump, alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss.
Frehley is survived by his daughter,Monique,and wife Jeanette Trerotola.
