Academic Nathan Cofnas Suspended Over Jason Arday Plagiarism Claims
Ghent University has suspended postdoctoral researcher Nathan Cofnas following his public accusations of plagiarism against the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday. The university confirmed a preliminary disciplinary investigation is underway, citing concerns over discriminatory statements made by Cofnas regarding Arday, who died on August 14.
Disciplinary Action at Ghent University
The administration at Ghent University, led by rector Petra De Sutter and vice-rector Herwig Reynaert, issued a formal statement addressing the controversy. The institution characterized the move as a precautionary suspension, emphasizing that while the university upholds academic freedom, such rights are not absolute and must be balanced against the responsibility to protect the dignity of others.
The rector noted that the recent public discourse should prompt reflection on how academics treat one another during periods of public controversy. Ghent University explicitly stated its opposition to discrimination and racism, framing the suspension as an appropriate action to uphold these institutional values.
The Academic Conflict and Prior Precedents
Nathan Cofnas, who describes himself as a “race realist,” gained attention for his persistent challenges to Arday’s academic achievements and integrity. This is not the first time Cofnas has faced professional consequences for his public stances. In 2024, his position at a Cambridge college was terminated following significant backlash regarding his expressed views on meritocracy and the representation of Black professionals in high-profile sectors.
The current investigation into Cofnas specifically focuses on his recent conduct concerning Arday. While the academic community often relies on peer review to settle disputes over research integrity, the intensity of this particular campaign—labeled by the Cambridge chancellor as a “racist feeding frenzy”—has moved the issue from the realm of scholarly debate into the sphere of institutional disciplinary oversight.
