As the end of 2025 approaches, the future of enhanced affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits hangs in the balance, potentially impacting millions of Americans who rely on them for health insurance affordability. A recent KFF Health tracking Poll reveals that most people are largely unaware of the impending expiration, including a majority of those who purchase their own insurance plans through the ACA Marketplace. Without congressional action, these individuals could face significantly higher premiums [KFF].
Public Support Strong for ACA Subsidy Extension
Despite the lack of widespread awareness, there’s considerable support for Congress to extend these subsidies, even among Republicans. The KFF poll indicates that 77% of adults believe Congress should extend the enhanced tax credits for ACA Marketplace plans. This includes 91% of Democrats,80% of independents, and 63% of Republicans. Even a majority (over 50%) of Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement supporters, a group historically critical of the ACA, favor extending the subsidies.
Did You Know? Enrollment in ACA Marketplace plans has nearly doubled since the implementation of these enhanced tax credits.
The Debate: Budget Concerns vs. Coverage Loss
The KFF poll explored how different arguments influence public opinion. when respondents who initially supported extending the tax credits were presented wiht the argument that doing so would increase federal spending and the budget deficit, support decreased by 19 percentage points, yet a majority (58%) still favored extension. Conversely, when those who initially opposed extending the credits heard that expiration would make health insurance unaffordable for many and result in approximately 4 million people losing coverage, support for extension increased to 84%.
