Abu Dhabi Trilateral Talks: US, Ukraine, Russia Seek Donbas Peace

February 1, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Russia, Ukraine, and US Hold First Tripartite Talks in Abu Dhabi to End War

Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States convened in abu Dhabi on Friday for the first direct, three-way discussions aimed at resolving the nearly four-year-long conflict. The talks centered around a peace plan supported by US President Donald Trump, with the contested Donbas region in eastern Ukraine remaining the primary obstacle to an agreement.

this meeting marks a important, albeit preliminary, step towards potential de-escalation. while details of the proposed plan remain largely undisclosed, sources indicate it addresses security concerns for both Ukraine and Russia, as well as the future political status of the Donbas region. The involvement of the US as a mediator is seen as crucial, given its influence with both parties.

The Donbas region, comprising the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, has been the epicenter of the conflict since 2014. Following the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatists in Donbas, leading to ongoing fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels. Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Russia of providing military support and personnel to the separatists, allegations Russia denies, claiming its involvement is limited to protecting the rights of Russian-speaking populations. While the outcome of the discussions remains uncertain, the fact that representatives from all three countries were present at the same table is a positive sign.Further negotiations are expected to take place in the coming weeks, with the goal of reaching a complete ceasefire and a lasting political settlement. Key challenges include establishing a credible mechanism for implementing any agreement, ensuring the security of the Donbas region, and addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected population.
