Absa Fraud Warning: Protect Yourself | MyBroadband
Absa Bank has issued a warning to its customers regarding a sophisticated phishing scam currently circulating, according to reports from MyBroadband on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
The fraudulent scheme involves criminals crafting highly convincing emails designed to deceive recipients. These emails contain links to fake bank statements, which, when clicked, redirect victims to malicious websites, Absa has warned. The bank did not specify the nature of the malicious websites or the data targeted.
MyBroadband reported that the scam is multi-layered, aiming to gain access to customer information. Although the specific methods of this multi-layered approach were not detailed, the reports indicate a coordinated effort to compromise accounts.
Recent data, as reported by MyBroadband, indicates the scale of fraud-related incidents in South Africa. Police records show 8.7 million fraud cases linked to ABSA and 8.3 million linked to Capitec in the past year. The banking industry as a whole is reportedly facing significant challenges from these types of scams.
Absa has not yet released details regarding the number of customers affected by the current phishing campaign, nor has it specified the measures being taken to mitigate the threat beyond the initial warning. A post on Facebook, shared by MyBroadband, highlighted reports of a specific scam involving a fake Absa fraud department and a purported supervisor, Nicolene Potgieter.
As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, Absa has not issued a public statement detailing the technical aspects of the fraudulent emails or the specific indicators customers should gaze for to identify them.
