Dog Abandoned Twice in Weeks; Volunteers Fight for Pup
Repeat Offender Suspected in Heartbreaking Case of “Tofu”
A young dog named “Tofu” faces an uncertain future after being abandoned in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, for the second time in a month. The persistent abandonment has ignited concern among volunteers, who now seek to secure the dog’s safety. They are working to prevent another heartbreaking episode.
Tofu’s Plight: A Cycle of Abandonment
The initial abandonment occurred in early June, when “Tofu” was left in a village, but was rescued by caring citizens. The dog was then placed with a temporary caretaker. However, the original owner later reclaimed the dog. Just nine days later, the same owner callously abandoned “Tofu” again, this time in a toilet in APM mall.

“The volunteers are worried that if the Fisheries and Protection Department returns the dog to the dog owner again, it will only hurt the dog again,” said volunteer Ms. Ye.

Sadly, animal shelters in Hong Kong are struggling with overcrowding, with an estimated 12,000 animals in need of homes as of July 2025 (Hong Kong Animal Welfare Association).
Chronology of Cruelty
At around 7:30 PM, a dog was discovered abandoned in a broken toilet on the APM LG floor in Kwun Tong. Security footage showed a woman taking the dog away. The dog, “Tofu,” is estimated to be less than one year old.
The dedicated volunteers are actively pursuing a solution. They have contacted the Fisheries and Protection Department. They are also seeking help from Akanwu. The former temporary caregiver is now in contact with authorities.
