Abandoned Oregon theater reopens to applause after two generations of DIY work

Athena,Oregon – the Gem theater and Star Saloon in⁣ Athena,Oregon, reopened to keen applause this⁣ weekend, marking the culmination⁤ of a two-generation,volunteer-driven restoration effort. The historic venue, a community landmark, had fallen into disrepair but has been brought back to life through decades of dedication and DIY work.

the⁣ reopening represents more than just a restored building; it signifies a renewed sense of community pride and offers a vibrant cultural hub for‍ the region. For nearly 70 years, the Gem stood silent, a relic ⁢of a bygone era. Now, it⁤ promises to be a cornerstone of Athena’s future, offering live performances, film screenings, and a gathering place for residents and visitors ⁣alike.

The restoration began‌ in ⁤earnest when former Weston-McEwen High ⁤School ⁣teacher Rob McIntyre discovered surplus theater seats from the demolished Gem ‍Theatre in Pendleton. He secured the seats ‌- exactly the number of right and left-side armrests needed – and,⁣ with his wife Elizabeth, transported them 1,300⁣ miles in a U-Haul.

Students enrolled in an elective class at the school district ⁣then took on ‌the‍ project, mentored by adult volunteers. One former student ⁢later contributed to the restoration of the Liberty Theatre ⁣in La Grande, while others pursued careers in city‌ planning, contracting, and building trades.

“Ther’s a sense of ‍ownership” among the community, McIntyre said. “I always told the kids this project was bigger than any of us. I had no idea at the time how big.”

The Gem Theatre and Star Saloon, managed by⁤ the nonprofit Athena’s Gem,inc.,is located at 239 E. Main‌ St. in Athena, a half mile north of Oregon Route 11.More facts can be found at gemtheatre.org.
