Lithuania mourns the passing of esteemed scholar and educator A. Vladislava Vasiliauskienė, a loss deeply felt by academic communities across the nation.
President Gitanas Nausėda expressed profound condolences, remembering Vasiliauskienė as a vibrant member of the Lithuanian Universities and the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences. Her work notably bridged diverse academic fields and illuminated the historical and cultural connections between Lithuania and Ukraine. The President’s tribute highlighted her meticulous approach, intellectual authority, and lasting contributions to lithuania’s cultural and scientific heritage.
Born in Galvydžiai, Svėdasai district, Vasiliauskienė initially pursued a career in music, graduating from the Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Music Technicum with a specialization in kanklės performance. She dedicated years to education, teaching in various Vilnius schools between 1964 and 1975.
Her academic journey continued at Vilnius University, where she earned a degree in history from the Faculty of History through part-time studies from 1967 to 1974.
Vasiliauskienė’s extensive tenure at Vilnius University spanned from 1975 to 2006. During this period, she served as a senior researcher at the Department of Ancient and Medieval History within the Faculty of History from 1992 to 1997.
Her academic influence extended to Šiauliai University, where she was a senior researcher at the Center for Northern Lithuanian Studies in the Faculty of Humanities from 2004 to 2010. Additionally, she held a position as an associate professor at the Department of Catholic Theology in the faculty of History at Vilnius pedagogical University from 2006 to 2008.
Internationally,A. Vladislava Vasiliauskienė was recognized as a senior researcher at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in Ukraine.
Her notable contributions were acknowledged with numerous accolades. In 2016,she was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania. ukraine honored her with the State Order of Princess Olga,Third Class,in 2006. Further recognition included the Medal of the Visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine in 2011 and the jubilee medals of Taras Shevchenko and Ivan franko from Lviv National Ivan Franko University in 2005.
Farewell ceremonies for the historian will be held in Jonava and Skapiškis, Kupiškis district.
