Train Derailment in Egypt Injures Dozens, Claims Three Lives
MATROUH GOVERNORATE, EGYPT – august 30, 2025, 18:30 EET – A train accident near Dabaa, in Egypt’s Matrouh Governorate, has left 94 people injured and resulted in three fatalities, authorities reported today. The incident, which occurred due to a reported fault in the railway line, prompted a full-scale emergency response and a declaration of maximum alert across the governorate’s critical infrastructure.
The derailment impacts rail travel between Alexandria and Cairo, disrupting scheduled services and triggering a major recovery operation. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about Egypt’s railway infrastructure and the safety of its passengers. Rescue efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and restore service, while investigations are launched to determine the precise cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences. Families of the deceased are awaiting the release of bodies from the Ras Al-Hikma Hospital morgue for burial.
According to a source within the Matrouh Governorate Court, the accident involved train number 1935, en route to Muharram Bey Station in Alexandria, with a planned continuation as train number 1936 to Cairo. A landline fault caused several train cars to leave the tracks and overturn. The governorate has activated maximum alert protocols for health services, security forces, and social solidarity organizations.
The egyptian Ministry of Health swiftly responded to the crisis. Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed his deputy, dr. Mohamed Al-Tayeb, to visit the accident site and directed hospitals in the region to prepare for a surge in patients. Thirty ambulances were deployed to provide on-site first aid and transport the injured to medical facilities.
As of this evening, 54 injured individuals are receiving treatment at Dabaa Central Hospital, while another 40 have been admitted to Ras Al-Hikma hospital. Medical teams are focused on providing comprehensive care, including blood transfusions and necessary medical supplies.
Matrouh Governor Major General Khaled Shuaib immediately visited the village of Zawiya Al-Awamah in Dabaa following the accident to oversee rescue operations and offer support. Seven ambulances were initially dispatched to transport casualties to nearby hospitals.
the Ministry of local Advancement, led by Minister Dr. Manal Awad, is coordinating with governorate officials to monitor the situation and ensure a unified response. Minister Awad has contacted relevant ministries to secure additional resources and support relief efforts for the injured and the families of the deceased.
The Public Prosecution has taken possession of the three bodies recovered from the scene at Ras al-Hikma Hospital, and is preparing for their release to relatives.
