Italian General Strike Disrupts Ports, Transport, and Schools in Solidarity wiht Gaza
Rome, Italy – A nationwide general strike in Italy is causing widespread disruption today, as workers across multiple sectors demonstrate solidarity with Gaza. Ports have been blockaded, transport networks impacted, and schools closed as unions mobilize against Israel’s actions and in support of humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
Teh strike, gaining momentum notably within port worker unions, reflects growing public concern over the escalating conflict. italian ports in Genoa, Marghera (Venice), Livorno, Trieste, Ancona, Civitavecchia, and Ravenna have all experienced disruptions, with workers halting operations. In Ravenna, port workers recently blocked two containers destined for Israel. The action is linked to the “Freedom Flotilla to Gaza,” an initiative aiming to deliver 200 tons of food donated by Italian citizens, currently stalled in Genoa.
The USB (Unione Sindacale di Base) union is playing a prominent role in organizing the protests, alongside broader union efforts. Demonstrations are also occurring in cities beyond the port areas, including a student-led manifestation in Turin. The strike’s impact extends beyond maritime trade, affecting road and rail transport, and leading to school closures in several regions. Organizers say the strike will continue until a ceasefire is secured and humanitarian aid is allowed unimpeded access to Gaza.
