Nicholas Brendon Dies: Xander From Buffy the Vampire Slayer Was 54

Nicholas Brendon, the actor widely recognized for his role as Xander Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 54, his family announced.

Brendon passed away in his sleep of natural causes, according to a statement released on his official Facebook page. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family said. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired on the WB network from 1997 to 2003, featured Brendon as Xander Harris, the show’s resident everyman and a key source of comedic relief alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar’s titular vampire slayer. Allyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, Xander’s close friend on the series, paid tribute to Brendon on Instagram. “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers,” Hannigan wrote. “I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”

Born in Los Angeles in 1971, Brendon initially pursued acting as a means to manage a stutter, later becoming a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He began his role as Xander Harris at the age of 25.

Following the conclusion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brendon continued to work in television, appearing in recurring roles on shows such as Criminal Minds, where he played FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch, a love interest for Penelope Garcia, from 2007 to 2014. He also had roles in Private Practice and an adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. His film credits include Demon Island and Unholy.

In recent years, Brendon had been open about his health struggles. He revealed in 2023 that he had suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, as well as cauda equina syndrome, a condition requiring multiple spinal surgeries. His family’s statement noted that, despite past difficulties with substance abuse and a history of arrests, Brendon was receiving treatment and “optimistic about the future” at the time of his death.

“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” his family said in their statement.
