Romero Focused on Spurs’ Relegation Battle, Dismisses Transfer Talk

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has downplayed speculation surrounding a potential summer transfer, emphasizing his commitment to the club’s immediate fight against Premier League relegation. The Argentine centre-back made the comments following Tottenham’s 3-2 victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday, a result that nevertheless saw the North London club eliminated from the competition with an aggregate score of 7-5.

Romero, who returned to the squad after observing concussion protocols, addressed questions about his future in a mixed zone interview with Spanish media. He stated, “The truth is that I’m focused on the situation we’re in. I have a lot of respect and affection for the club and I seek to finish the season in the best way possible. We’ll see later but the most important thing now is to recover energy to help Spurs.”

The 27-year-old’s comments come amid reported interest from Atlético Madrid, with their manager Diego Simeone publicly praising Romero on Tuesday. However, Romero deflected direct inquiries about a move, prioritizing Tottenham’s precarious league position. According to Wikipedia, Romero joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2022 after a loan spell, and currently captains the team.

Romero’s stance aligns with recent statements from other Tottenham players, including Micky van de Ven, who dismissed suggestions of a lack of commitment to the relegation battle, and Pedro Porro, who also downplayed talk of a return to Spain.
