A severe storm struck Salta Capital and the southern region of Salta province after midday on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The storm caused significant disruption in Metán and Rosario de la Frontera, impacting transportation routes and raising concerns among local agricultural producers.

Residents of Metán and Rosario de la Frontera reported heavy rainfall and strong winds. Witnesses shared videos with Radio Salta showing the impact of the storm on the highway connecting the two localities. The intensity of the rainfall has led to the formation of potholes and erosion on the access roads to the Colectora Sur in Metán, according to reports from El Vocero.

The storm’s impact extends beyond transportation infrastructure. Local producers have voiced concerns about potential flooding and the resulting damage to crops. The situation is particularly worrying given the region’s reliance on agriculture.

Authorities have initiated repairs on National Route 9/34 between Metán and Rosario de la Frontera. Salta Governor Gustavo Sáenz toured the affected areas accompanied by the mayors of Metán, José María Issa and Rosario de la Frontera, Kuldeep Singh, as well as Federico Casas, head of the Salta District of National Roads Directorate.

Metán, located 140 kilometers from the provincial capital, Salta City, is the fifth-largest city in the province, with a population of approximately 40,000 as of 2010. The city is strategically positioned near the borders of Jujuy and Tucumán provinces, and benefits from connections via National Routes 9 and 34, as well as the General Belgrano Railway, linking it to Bolivia, Chile, and the Paraná River port of Barranqueras.

As of Tuesday evening, no official statements regarding potential evacuations or damage assessments have been released by provincial authorities.
