Tamaiti Williams: Crusaders Prop Suspended 3 Weeks for Dangerous Play

Crusaders prop Tamaiti Williams has been suspended for three weeks following a review of a dangerous play incident during his team’s 43-33 victory over the Chiefs on Saturday, March 1st. The Super Rugby Pacific foul play review committee found Williams guilty of making direct shoulder contact to the head of Chiefs lock Tupou Vaa’i during a ruck in the 15th minute of the match at FMG Stadium Waikato.

The incident, which was not initially penalized by on-field officials, was subsequently cited. Television footage reviewed by the committee appeared to show Williams making contact with Vaa’i’s head while attempting to clear out the ruck, causing the Chiefs player to fall backwards clutching his head, according to 1News.

The committee determined that Williams had contravened law 9.20a, pertaining to dangerous play in rucks and mauls. The initial assessment assigned a mid-range entry point of six weeks, but this was reduced by 50 percent due to Williams’ acceptance of the charge, his previously clean disciplinary record, and demonstrated remorse, as reported by the Crusaders organization.

Williams has similarly been granted the opportunity to participate in World Rugby’s Coaching Intervention Programme. Successful completion of the program would reduce the suspension by one week, potentially allowing him to return for the match against Moana Pasifika on March 21st. However, he will miss the upcoming matches against the Blues on March 7th, the Highlanders on March 14th, and initially, the Moana Pasifika game.

The suspension comes as a blow to the Crusaders, who secured their first win of the Super Rugby Pacific season against the Chiefs. Williams, who also represents the All Blacks, was a key contributor to that victory. RNZ News reported that the 25-year-aged has 27 test caps for the All Blacks.

The foul play review committee’s decision aligns with a pattern of applying the Coaching Intervention Programme as a potential sanction reduction in similar cases, according to multiple reports. The program is intended to address dangerous play through targeted coaching and education.
