by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

The Evergreen State College campus recreation center will be open all day starting March 2, offering lap swim, open swim, and lessons, according to a recent announcement.

The main pool features nine lap lanes, each 25 yards in length, and a two-lane open swim area during lap swim hours. During swim lessons, the pool offers seven lap lanes and a two-lane open swim area. Water depths range from 4 to 8 feet. A separate dive well is available for front dives only during open swim evenings on Mondays and Fridays.

A variety of aquatic equipment is available for leverage, including pool noodles, toys, pull buoys, kickboards, aqua jogging belts, fins, and life jackets. Inflatables and double-fins are prohibited during open swim, and lifeguards retain the authority to restrict unsafe activities.

Lap swim hours are scheduled from 7 a.m. To 6:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. Open swim, with access to the diving board, is available from 6:45 p.m. To 8:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 12:15 p.m. To 3 p.m. On Saturdays. The pool temperature is maintained between 80 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Adult private swim lessons will be offered starting January 5th. A free 15-minute consultation is available, with 30-minute sessions priced at $20. Interested individuals can contact Alexandra Dines at alexandra.dines@evergreen.edu to schedule lessons.

Membership pricing information is available on the Evergreen State College website. The recreation center will adhere to campus closure notifications due to weather or power outages, with information available through the college’s emergency notification system: https://www.evergreen.edu/emergency-notifications.

According to World Aquatics (formerly FINA) specifications, Olympic-size swimming pools used for competition are 50 meters in length, with a minimum depth of 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) and a recommended depth of 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) when used for multiple disciplines. While the Evergreen pool is shorter at 25 yards, the dive well maintains a depth of at least 5 meters (16 feet) to meet safety standards for platform diving, as recommended by FINA.
