Production on a fifth installment in the Jurassic World franchise is quietly progressing, with a planned start in the United Kingdom next month, according to industry reports. The confirmation follows the 2025 release of Jurassic World Rebirth, which grossed $869.1 million worldwide despite a mixed critical reception.
Details emerged from a recent webinar hosted by Film Base on February 5, which highlighted several “big tent-pole movies” slated to begin production in the UK in March, including the next Jurassic film. While Universal Pictures has not issued an official announcement, the timeline mirrors the rapid development and release of Rebirth, revealed in January 2024 and released in theaters less than 18 months later.
Jurassic World Rebirth served as a soft reboot for the franchise, introducing a new cast including Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. Reports late last year indicated that Universal was in negotiations to bring these actors back for a fifth film, though those discussions have not been publicly confirmed.
The success of Rebirth, despite receiving a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, provides a strong financial incentive for Universal to continue the series. The film garnered a 70% audience score and a “B” CinemaScore, demonstrating its appeal to moviegoers. While it did not reach the $1 billion benchmark achieved by previous installments, its $869.1 million global box office, combined with a relatively lower production budget of around $180 million, resulted in a substantial profit margin.
Universal’s decision to move forward with a fifth film is somewhat surprising given the critical response to Rebirth, which was described as having a “paper-thin script” and “underdeveloped characters.” The film also controversially retconned elements of the previous two installments, Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022). However, the film has been nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 98th Academy Awards.
The franchise originally began as a trilogy with the 2015 revival of Jurassic World, and the third film was confirmed before the release of the second. The quick turnaround for a fifth installment suggests Universal views the Jurassic World property as a key component of its future release slate.
