ORLANDO, FL – Lionel Messi scored a brace, including a stunning late free kick, as Inter Miami CF rallied to defeat Orlando City SC 4-2 Sunday night in a thrilling Florida Derby. The victory, secured at Exploria Stadium, marks Inter Miami’s first win of the 2026 Major League Soccer season and a crucial rebound after a season-opening 3-0 loss to LAFC.
Orlando City took an early lead, capitalizing on defensive lapses from the defending MLS Cup champions. Marco Pasalic opened the scoring in the 18th minute, followed by a goal from Martin Ojeda just six minutes later, establishing a 2-0 advantage for the home side before halftime.
Inter Miami responded emphatically after the break. Mateo Silvetti ignited the comeback in the 49th minute, narrowing the deficit with a long-range strike. Messi then leveled the score in the 57th minute, netting his first goal of the 2026 MLS season – his 51st in 55 MLS matches – after a feed from Telasco Segovia. This goal extended Messi’s remarkable streak to 22 consecutive years scoring at least one goal.
Segovia then place Inter Miami ahead in the 85th minute, finishing a play initiated by Germán Berterame and assisted by Messi. Messi sealed the victory with a spectacular free kick in the 90th minute, leaving Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese with no chance.
“Like I’ve said a thousand times, [he is] obviously the best player to ever play this sport. He’s a leader,” said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano after the match. “It’s contagious for everyone.”
The comeback victory was particularly significant as it represented Inter Miami’s first-ever win at Orlando City’s stadium across nine attempts. The win also showcased a dominant second-half performance from the Herons, who, according to Mascherano, played with “heart, bravery with the ball, resilience, commitment.”
Inter Miami will return to action next week, while Orlando City will seek to rebound from the defeat. The schedule for the next match for both teams has not yet been released.
