BOISE, Idaho – Former Boise State offensive lineman Charles Leno, Jr. Will return to his alma mater today to emphasize the importance of financial literacy to current Bronco student-athletes, as Boise State expands its financial education programming in partnership with Robinhood Money Drills®.
The university’s initiative, a for-credit course available to all Boise State students, offers targeted workshops for student-athletes addressing the unique financial challenges presented by college athletics and the evolving landscape of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. Supported by Robinhood and guided by faculty from the College of Business and Economics, the program aims to equip student-athletes with practical skills in budgeting, saving, tax management, investing, and credit management.
“We are grateful to Robinhood and Financial Footwork for bringing this innovative financial education program to our student-athletes and ensuring they have access to the tools needed to succeed both now and in the future,” said Sara Whiles, Associate Athletic Director for BroncoLife & Varsity B. “As revenue-sharing opportunities expand and student-athletes commence earning income earlier than ever, programs like this are essential.”
Leno, Jr., a 10-year NFL veteran who played for the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders, played offensive tackle for the Broncos from 2009 to 2013. He and his wife, Jenn, joined the Lyle Smith Society (LSS) last summer, designating their contribution to Bronco football, the football equipment room, and BroncoLife. He started 39 consecutive games at offensive tackle for Boise State.
“I want Bronco student-athletes to be ready for the opportunities ahead,” Leno, Jr. Said. “When I was drafted, I had limited financial guidance and I had to learn through experience. If I can help them avoid some of those early mistakes, that is a win.”
According to Boise State, 95% of students participating in the Robinhood Money Drills® program have reported improved personal finance management skills since its launch two years ago. Surveys indicate student interest is particularly high in learning about taxes, investing, and debt management.
The program is delivered in part through NIL University by Financial Footwork, which focuses on providing financial literacy skills tailored to the specific challenges and opportunities presented by NIL in college athletics. The PAC x Robinhood Money Drills Ambassador Program will bring Leno, Jr. Back to Boise State to participate in the Money Drills course and share insights with current student-athletes.
