Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro, slated for release in 2026, will feature an upgraded AI upscaler, confirmed to be AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), according to recent statements by Mark Cerny and reports from industry analysts.
The integration of FSR 4 represents a significant advancement over the current PlayStation 5’s scaling technology, known as PlayStation Scaler Resolution (PSSR). Cerny indicated that PSSR will be replaced with the new AI-driven upscaling solution, promising improved image quality and performance. This development comes as Sony and AMD are engaged in a substantial engineering partnership, with “large chunks of RDNA 5” being designed collaboratively, according to Wccftech.
The move to FSR 4 also highlights a divergence in approaches between Sony and Microsoft regarding upscaling technology. Although the PS5 Pro is receiving this substantial upgrade, older Radeon graphics cards are not slated to receive similar improvements. This has prompted discussion within the gaming community about the future of image scaling and the competitive landscape between the console manufacturers.
The arrival of FSR 4 on the PS5 Pro is expected to enhance the visual fidelity of games, particularly as developers increasingly leverage the power of AI to improve graphics. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, recently released on the PS5, has already demonstrated a “solid” port to the console, according to Digital Foundry, suggesting the PS5’s capabilities are well-suited for demanding titles.
The collaboration between Sony and AMD extends beyond FSR 4, with the two companies working together on the underlying architecture of the next-generation console. This partnership is expected to yield further advancements in graphics and performance, positioning the PS5 Pro as a leading platform for high-fidelity gaming. As of now, neither Sony nor AMD have provided specific details regarding the implementation of FSR 4 or the overall performance gains expected from the PS5 Pro.
