Mapleton Wrestling: 2 Girls Qualify for Districts After Sectional Success

Two Mapleton High School female wrestlers qualified for the district tournament following competition at the Northeast sectional held Sunday at Northwest High School, according to reports from local news outlets.

Skylar Hopstetter, a senior, advanced to the championship match at 135 pounds, securing her place at the district level. She ultimately finished as runner-up to Auston Brown of United High School. A total of three Mapleton wrestlers participated in the sectional tournament.

The Northeast sectional was one of eighteen Ohio Athletic High School Association sectional tournaments held across Northeast Ohio on February 28, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The district tournament is scheduled to take place next Sunday at Mentor High School.

Several other area wrestlers likewise qualified for the district tournament. Medina High School sent four wrestlers – Dominic Difilippo (113 pounds), Taegan Gilmore (120), Cooper Kaplack (126), and Cliff Nicholson (285) – after winning sectional titles at the Austintown Fitch Sectional. Brunswick High School also had three champions: Brayden Miles (150), Travis Latta (157), and Carter Wickes (165). Louisville High School won the team title at the Euclid Sectional, qualifying twelve wrestlers for the district tournament.

Ashland High School won the team race at the Maple Heights Sectional with 13 district qualifiers and four sectional champions. Aurora High School qualified six wrestlers, with Nick Turba (126), Michael Kennedy (157), and Drake Brasiel (175) winning sectional titles. Perry High School won the team title at the Perry Sectional, sending 12 wrestlers to the district tournament.
