Sturgill Simpson’s latest album, Mutiny After Midnight, arrived unexpectedly on YouTube Music nearly two weeks before its scheduled physical release on March 13th. The album, credited to Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds, marks Simpson’s second release under the Johnny Blue Skies moniker, following 2024’s Passage du Desir.
Simpson initially announced his intention to retire the Sturgill Simpson name after five studio albums in 2021. However, he circumvented this self-imposed limitation by adopting the alter ego Johnny Blue Skies for Passage du Desir, released in July 2024 through High Top Mountain. The move, he explained, was a reaction against expectation and a desire to explore new creative avenues. “There’s a contrarian in me that always wants to push against any kind of expectation,” Simpson stated, according to Wikipedia. “If something works, there’s a thought in my brain, like, ‘No, I’m being told to do that again.’”
Passage du Desir was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London and Clement House in Nashville, and received positive reviews from critics. Simpson had stated that the album would not be supported by promotional singles, but would be accompanied by a tour featuring both his original name and the Johnny Blue Skies persona.
The new album, Mutiny After Midnight, represents a stylistic shift from the roots-rock sound of Passage du Desir. Simpson described the project as an attempt to create a dance record, and early tracks like “Create America Fuk Again” and “Excited Delirium” demonstrate a funkier, more rock-oriented approach. The album features a different lineup than Simpson’s previous backing band, including guitarist Jake Bugg and pedal steel player Dan Dugmore, alongside Sierra Hull, Steve Mackey, and Fred Eltringham.
The release strategy for Mutiny After Midnight – a physical-only release initially, followed by an early digital drop on YouTube Music – is unconventional. The album is available for pre-order in physical formats through Atlantic Outpost.
