Jack Rudoni scored a decisive goal in the 94th minute to secure a 2-1 victory for Coventry City over Stoke City at the CBS Arena on Friday, February 28, 2026, extending their lead at the top of the Championship table with 11 games remaining.

Haji Wright had earlier given Coventry the advantage, finding the net in the 12th minute. However, Stoke City equalized just before halftime with a goal from a corner, momentarily halting Coventry’s momentum. The match remained tied until Rudoni’s late intervention, a goal that arrived after a period of sustained pressure from the home side.

The CBS Arena hosted a record crowd of 31,516 for the fixture, witnessing a hard-fought contest. Coventry City manager Frank Lampard described the performance as “one of our best home performances from the first minute,” despite acknowledging his team’s missed opportunities in the first half. Lampard noted that his team should have been “two or three goals ahead at half-time” based on their early play.

The equalizer conceded by Coventry proved frustrating for Lampard, who highlighted the unexpected nature of the goal. “From zero threat from them, I suppose they get a free kick in their own half, launch it in the box, get their first corner and score and that’s obviously disheartening,” he said. Despite the setback, Lampard praised his team’s character in securing the win.

Former Coventry City goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic, speaking to BBC CWR, observed that Coventry had not played particularly well but had demonstrated the resilience of a good team. He pointed to tactical time-wasting by Stoke City, including apparent injuries to goalkeeper and defender Ben Gibson, during stoppage time, as a contributing factor to the extended period that ultimately allowed Coventry to score the winning goal.

The victory marks Coventry City’s fourth consecutive win, solidifying their position at the summit of the Championship. Stoke City, meanwhile, were left to rue a late defeat despite a determined effort, according to reports. The match extended Coventry’s winning streak and increased the pressure on their rivals in the promotion race.

Ellis Simms played a key role in the build-up to Rudoni’s winning goal, with his work creating the opportunity for the late strike. The goal itself deflected off Stoke defender Ben Gibson before finding the back of the net, adding a stroke of luck to Coventry’s triumph.
