Around one hundred protestors gathered outside the BHV department store in Grenoble, France, on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, to demonstrate against the recent opening of a Shein boutique within the store.
The demonstration, organized by a coalition of left-wing organizations including Jeunes Écologistes Grenoble, Jeunes Communistes Isère, Jeunes Socialistes Isère, and Attac Isère, echoed similar protests held in November 2025 when Shein’s physical presence in Grenoble was first announced. Protestors voiced concerns over what they describe as “predatory capitalism” and the environmental and human costs associated with “ultra-fast fashion,” according to reporting from France Bleu.
The groups are critical of Shein’s business model, citing concerns about exploitation of workers, mass pollution, and the presence of toxic substances in its clothing. “Shein casse-toi, Grenoble n’est pas à toi,” – “Shein get out, Grenoble is not yours” – was among the slogans chanted by demonstrators, as reported by Le Dauphiné.
The protest took place just three days after the Shein store opened its doors within the BHV, formerly Galeries Lafayette. While Shein enjoys significant online popularity, initial observations suggest that foot traffic in the physical store has been lower than anticipated, according to France Bleu.
Demonstrators promoted alternatives to Shein, including secondhand clothing stores and consignment shops, framing them as more ethical and sustainable options. A petition against Shein’s arrival in Grenoble has garnered over 10,000 signatures, according to Le Dauphiné. Léonie Marcoux, co-secretary of the Jeunes Écologistes Rhône-Alpes region, characterized Shein as “unfair competition for the boutiques in the city center” and a threat to a “living, supportive and sustainable city center.”
Paul Gauriat, a co-leader of the local Jeunes Écologistes group, denounced the “human exploitation” and “massive pollution” associated with Shein, adding that the company’s garments are “full of toxic substances.” Kyllian Bures, a young socialist from the Isère department, called for support of local commerce and Grenoble-based fashion.
The protest follows a similar demonstration organized by the same groups in February 2026, as reported by Actu.fr, highlighting the sustained opposition to Shein’s presence in Grenoble.
