Members of the Tsawout First Nation have narrowly rejected a proposed farm development plan, according to a report from the Times Colonist published Saturday.
The vote outcome was communicated to members this week by Chief and council, who did not disclose the margin of the rejection. Details of the plan itself remain limited, but the decision halts its progression in its current form.
The Tsawout First Nation is currently undertaking several development projects, including a community splash pad and park scheduled to move forward, as well as the construction of 24 new housing units through the Building BC: Indigenous Community Housing Fund, announced in April 2025. These projects are outlined in the Nation’s Draft Strategic Plan 2022-2027, which prioritizes sustainable development and the exertion of Indigenous rights and title.
The rejected farm development plan’s specifics, and the reasons for its narrow defeat, have not been publicly detailed. The Tsawout First Nation has not issued a further statement regarding next steps or potential revisions to the proposal as of Sunday, March 1, 2026.
