Tonight’s TV: The Lady, Lord of the Flies & Call the Midwife Highlights

The penultimate episode of ITV’s true-crime drama, “The Lady,” focused on a pivotal holiday and subsequent confrontation in the life of Jane Andrews, the former dresser to Sarah Ferguson who was later convicted of murder. The episode depicted Andrews, played by Mia McKenna-Bruce, accompanying her boyfriend Tommy Cressman, portrayed by Ed Speleers, on a family vacation, harboring hopes of a marriage proposal.

The drama unfolded as those hopes went unfulfilled, leading to a tense return to London and a “make-or-break” conversation between Andrews and Cressman that escalated beyond control, according to a review in The Independent. The series is based on the real-life case of Jane Andrews, who murdered her boyfriend, Thomas Cressman, in 2000.

Andrews had worked as a dresser for Sarah, Duchess of York, giving her access to royal circles and a seemingly glamorous lifestyle. However, as detailed in reports by Tatler and Cosmopolitan, this facade concealed a troubled relationship with Cressman, marked by possessiveness and volatility. The series explores the descent from this privileged position to a life behind bars.

The real Jane Andrews is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Thomas Cressman. Reports indicate she has been denied parole multiple times. The case garnered significant media attention due to Andrews’ royal connections and the dramatic circumstances surrounding the crime. According to ELLE, the ITV drama aims to portray the complexities of Andrews’ character and the events leading up to the murder, though some details have been altered for dramatic effect.

Elsewhere in television programming on Sunday, Channel 5 broadcasted “Romance Scams: Don’t Get Caught Out,” featuring advice on protecting oneself from financial exploitation in relationships. BBC One aired an episode of “Call the Midwife” and the concluding part of “Lord of the Flies,” Jack Thorne’s adaptation of the classic novel. Sky Witness presented “Watson,” while BBC Four offered a behind-the-scenes seem at the making of “Lord of the Flies.” Film4 screened “Fire Will Come,” a low-key drama set in rural Spain. Premier League football matches featuring Manchester United versus Crystal Palace and Arsenal versus Chelsea were also broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event.
