Indianapolis, IN – Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck faced a chorus of boos during passing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, stemming from his performance against Indiana in the national championship game earlier this year. The Hoosiers defeated Beck’s Hurricanes 27-21 to win their first national title, a result clearly still fresh in the minds of Indiana fans who traveled to Indianapolis for the combine.
A significant contingent of Indiana supporters jeered Beck each time he was shown on camera and during his attempts to throw, according to reports from NFL Network and multiple news outlets. Beck, who transferred to Miami after six years at Georgia, appeared unfazed by the hostile reception, even smiling as the boos rained down, NFL Network cameras showed.
Beck’s final collegiate game against Indiana saw him throw for 232 yards and one touchdown. Despite the performance, the Hoosiers’ victory clearly resonated with their fanbase. The booing continued throughout Beck’s throwing session, with fans seemingly intent on making their displeasure known.
The 23-year-old Beck completed 72.4% of his passes for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns during his single season at Miami, leading the Hurricanes to a College Football Playoff berth. He had initially declared for the NFL draft last year before returning to college. An elbow injury sustained during his time at Georgia had been a point of concern, but Beck reportedly demonstrated during the combine that it was no longer an issue.
However, Beck’s 12 interceptions for Miami, including the final pass of the championship game, were not forgotten by the Indiana crowd. Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, also received boos from the same group of fans when displayed on the stadium’s big screen.
Beck did not participate in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, or broad jump at the combine. His performance during the throwing drills, despite the distractions, will be closely scrutinized by NFL scouts as they evaluate his draft potential. The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25.
