Austria claimed the inaugural Olympic gold medal in the men’s super team ski jump event on Saturday, February 28, 2026, as the competition was shortened due to inclement weather. The event, a new addition to the Olympic program, saw Austria outperform other nations in the team format.
While the Austrian team celebrated their victory, the Polish team experienced a mixed day. Kacper Tomasiak, a 19-year-old Polish ski jumper, has been a standout performer at the Games, securing a silver medal in the normal hill event and a bronze on the larger hill in Predazzo. He then teamed with Paweł Wąsek to achieve a second-place finish in the dramatic pairs competition. However, Tomasiak did not participate in the individual large hill competition held in Bad Miterndorf, Austria, opting instead to prepare for the upcoming Junior World Championships in Norway.
The Polish team’s performance at the Kulm ski flying hill competition was particularly disappointing. Only Kamil Stoch and Piotr Żyła represented Poland in the second round, with Stoch finishing 23rd overall. Earlier in the day, qualifying rounds saw three Polish jumpers – Kubacki and Joniak, along with Wąsek – fail to advance. Wąsek finished 41st in qualifying, falling short of a qualifying spot.
Piotr Żyła, who had previously shown strong form, managed a jump of 182 meters, placing 36th and failing to reach the second round. Kamil Stoch improved in the second round, achieving a jump of 197 meters to move up to 23rd place. Despite the improvement, Stoch did not surpass the 200-meter mark.
Polish team coach Maciej Maciusiak expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance in Kulm. “We definitely didn’t come here with these expectations. We are not performing well on the flying hill,” Maciusiak stated to Eurosport following the competition. He acknowledged Stoch’s resilience, noting, “You have to praise Kamil Stoch, because he had a difficult time on this hill. He pulled himself together and managed to finish around 23rd or 24th place. That’s a small plus today.”
Maciusiak indicated the team would strive for better results in the remaining competition day at Kulm. “We have another day ahead of us, and we will do everything to build it much better. We’ll see how it turns out,” he said. The Polish team will continue competing in Kulm on Sunday.
