Marion Rousse: Balancing Tour de France Directorship & Family Life

The demanding schedule of directing the Tour de France Femmes, coupled with the travel commitments of her cyclist partner Julian Alaphilippe, is creating significant challenges for Marion Rousse, the former French national road race champion.

Rousse, currently overseeing preparations for the 2026 Grande Boucle Féminine which will finish in Nice, recently spoke to readers of Nice-Matin about the difficulties of balancing her professional obligations with her personal life. Her week included a trip to Portugal to support Alaphilippe during the Tour d’Algarve, his return race, immediately followed by a return to France and a heavy workload related to the Tour de France Femmes.

“You have to be well supported,” Rousse explained, acknowledging the difficulty in conveying the scope of her work to Alaphilippe. “When I explain my job to Julian, he is a million miles away from imagining what it takes to organize a race.” She emphasized the crucial role her mother plays in allowing her to continue her career, stating, “If I didn’t have my mom to gaze after Nino [her five-year-old son], I couldn’t do this job.”

The strain on family time is considerable. Rousse admitted to periods of extended absence, saying, “Sometimes I don’t see him for a month. It’s a balance to find, it’s not easy, but I’m lucky he’s coping well with the situation.” The situation is particularly difficult for Alaphilippe, who spends over 250 days a year traveling for competitions, according to Rousse. She noted that, as he approaches the later stages of his career, he feels a heightened pressure to perform at his best, which further impacts his time with his son.

Rousse highlighted the emotional connection Alaphilippe has with their son, Nino, revealing that he always takes a photograph of Nino with his favorite toy before leaving for races, wanting to keep him close even when physically apart. “These emotions he shares with his son allow him to fight at the right time. This birth similarly made him stronger!” she said.

The couple’s relationship has evolved over time. Rousse previously married fellow cyclist Tony Gallopin in 2014, but the pair separated in February 2020. Two months later, Alaphilippe publicly confirmed their relationship in an interview with L’Équipe. They welcomed their son, Nino, in June 2021.

Despite the challenges, Rousse continues to balance her roles as race director, television consultant for France Télévisions covering events like the Tour de France and the Dauphiné, and mother. The demands of her position, however, continue to create a complex dynamic within her family life.
