Coventry City extended their lead at the top of the English Championship to five points with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United, overcoming a first-half deficit to secure a crucial win. The result, achieved on Wednesday, adds momentum to Coventry’s promotion push after a recent period of inconsistent form.
Harrison Burrows put Sheffield United ahead shortly after halftime, raising hopes for the hosts who are striving to secure a playoff position. However, Coventry responded swiftly with two goals in quick succession from Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni, turning the match in their favor and demonstrating their resilience.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Millwall significantly boosted their own promotion aspirations with a dominant 3-0 win against Birmingham City. Goals from Femi Azeez, Tristan Crama, and Jake Cooper propelled Millwall to within four points of second-placed Middlesbrough. Birmingham’s hopes of reaching the playoffs suffered a blow as Jhon Solís received a red card during the match, and the team now sits five points outside the top six.
Millwall manager Alex Neil praised his team’s performance, stating, “We had to be absolutely on it tonight to secure a result and I thought we were. We were excellent. The lads took every instruction and did it brilliantly.” He further characterized the team’s performance at The Den as “entertaining to watch, high-octane going forward, lots of tackles,” reflecting the desired atmosphere and intensity of home matches.
Further down the table, Norwich City continued their climb away from the relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday. Goals from Mathias Kvistgaarden and Paris Maghoma secured the win for Norwich, moving them eight points clear of the drop zone.
Stoke City too bolstered their playoff hopes with a 2-1 win over Oxford United. Lamine Cissé opened the scoring for Stoke, but Ciaron Brown quickly equalized for Oxford. Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, on loan from Crystal Palace, then scored his first goal for Stoke to secure the three points. Stoke’s manager, Mark Robins, highlighted Cissé’s performance, praising his composure and lethal finish. “He had to wait for a chance… He looks like he is enjoying himself and he took the goal expertly,” Robins said.
Oxford United remain in a precarious position, second-bottom of the table and six points from safety, facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation.
