Charleston Downtown: Parking vs Uber & Day 3 Itinerary

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Visitors to Charleston, South Carolina, are weighing options for navigating the city’s historic downtown, with a key decision point being whether to utilize ride-sharing services like Uber or park in one of the area’s numerous parking garages.

The choice presents a common dilemma for tourists, particularly those staying outside the immediate downtown area. Charleston’s compact layout makes walking a viable option for exploring many attractions, but the city’s popularity and warm climate can make both walking and securing parking challenging. Uber offers a convenient alternative, allowing visitors to avoid the stress of finding a parking space, but costs can accumulate quickly.

Parking garages are plentiful in the downtown core, operated by a mix of public and private entities including Charleston County, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina, alongside several private companies. According to information from the City of Charleston, rates generally hover around $1 for 20 minutes, with a daily maximum of $24. Garages offer amenities such as public restrooms, and some even provide electric vehicle charging stations or hotel parking. However, the city notes that it is not currently accepting applications for monthly parking accounts due to a lack of vacancies.

While the city manages several parking facilities, it has no authority to open privately-owned garages to the public during emergencies, a point highlighted by city officials. This underscores the fragmented nature of parking availability and the potential for limited access during peak times or special events.

Uber provides the option of scheduling rides in advance, up to 90 days ahead, a feature designed to alleviate concerns about pickup times, which can be longer in Charleston compared to larger cities. The company as well promotes opportunities for individuals to earn income by providing rides or deliveries within the city, utilizing either their own vehicles or rental options through Uber.

Biking is another option, with Charleston offering a network of streets accommodating cyclists, though caution is advised on streets with higher traffic volumes. The city’s relatively flat terrain generally favors biking, making it a practical way to explore historic sites and scenic areas.

A recent discussion on an online travel forum highlighted the concerns of visitors, with one user inquiring whether to park the car at their vacation rental over the bridge and employ Uber, or attempt to find parking downtown. The question remains a common one for those planning a visit to Charleston.
