A former prison in the historic Bavarian city of Neuburg an der Donau is being position up for sale by the state of Bavaria, officials announced this week. The Justice Administration Center Neuburg, which closed last year due to economic unviability, will be officially listed for bidding in the coming weeks, according to Immobilien Freistaat Bayern, the state’s real estate company.
The closure followed years of mounting costs for maintenance and necessary renovations, rendering the facility unsustainable. The complex, encompassing three buildings dating back as far as 1577, once housed up to 73 inmates, with 27 single occupancy cells and communal rooms for three to six prisoners. Those incarcerated served sentences ranging from six months to three years.
The property’s unique history and location within the traditional town are expected to attract a diverse range of potential buyers. Originally constructed in 1577 as a riding school for the Wittelsbach dynasty, the site has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries before becoming a prison in 1875. The city of Neuburg had previously considered purchasing the property itself, but ultimately did not pursue the acquisition.
Immobilien Freistaat Bayern’s Christina Nick explained in a recent interview that all security-related elements have been removed from the site, but features like cell bars and heavy doors remain, offering potential for creative reuse. “It’s bought as seen,” Nick stated, suggesting that these elements could be incorporated into a new design or contribute to the property’s unique character.
Interest in the property has already surfaced, with potential investors contacting the state government following initial media reports. While no formal bidding process has begun, several inquiries have been received, though specific offers have not yet been disclosed. Currently, the property is undergoing a detailed assessment to determine its exact square footage and to clarify requirements related to its status as a listed historical building.
The sale presents an opportunity for a novel redevelopment project. Speculation has centered on potential uses such as an event venue or even a “knast hotel” – a prison-themed hotel – following the model of a similar establishment already operating in Amberg, Bavaria. The annual Schlossfest, a popular festival held around the former prison grounds, could also factor into future plans for the site.
Bidders can submit offers directly to the state of Bavaria, with the highest bid expected to secure the property and the right to repurpose the former prison according to their vision. The state has not yet announced a deadline for submissions.
