Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi will stand trial on sexual assault allegations, according to announcements made Tuesday by both his legal team and the complainant’s counsel.
The case stems from an incident reported in February 2023, in which a 24-year-old woman accused Hakimi of sexual assault. Hakimi was indicted in March 2023, but has consistently denied the charges. “I deny the accusations and will prove everything is false,” Hakimi stated via social media, while also acknowledging the proceedings would move forward.
Hakimi’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, affirmed their resolve to fight the charges. “We are resolute and ready to fight for trial. We are waiting for justice to be served,” Colin said, adding that an appeal had been filed against the decision to proceed with the trial.
The complainant’s lawyer, Lacelle-Flore Pardo, welcomed the decision to move the case to trial, stating it was “completely consistent with the evidence.” Pardo also noted that the case highlights a continuing issue within the men’s soccer world, where the impact of the MeToo movement has been limited.
Paris Saint-Germain has not issued an official statement regarding the trial. However, sources close to the club, as reported by The Athletic, have expressed support for Hakimi and reiterated his denial of the allegations.
Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Hakimi has continued to play regularly for PSG. He started in the team’s 3-0 victory over FC Metz on February 22nd. PSG coach Luis Enrique briefly addressed the matter, stating it was “in the hands of the judicial system.”
A trial date has not yet been confirmed. The case is drawing significant attention within the soccer world, as Hakimi is a prominent defender for both PSG and the Moroccan national team.
