Alonso & Aston Martin-Honda: Déjà Vu & F1 Future Doubt?

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Fernando Alonso is facing a familiar sense of déjà vu as his new partnership with Honda and Aston Martin struggles for reliability just weeks before the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Spaniard, now 44, joined Aston Martin with hopes of a final championship push, but early testing has been plagued by issues reminiscent of his previous stint with Honda at McLaren.

The pairing of Alonso, Honda, and crucially, Adrian Newey, was touted as a potential game-changer. Newey, renowned for his innovative car designs, had previously been unable to deliver Alonso a world championship, with missed opportunities at McLaren and Red Bull. Alonso had long awaited the chance to work with Newey, believing his car designs were the key to unlocking his potential. However, the initial results have been far from promising.

Alonso’s previous experience with Honda, beginning in 2015 at McLaren, was marked by unfulfilled promises and mechanical unreliability. While Honda eventually achieved success with Red Bull in 2020-2021, Alonso’s time with the engine manufacturer was largely frustrating, forcing him to fight for minor results rather than contend for victories. He last won a race in May 2013.

“Everything can be fixed, for sure,” Alonso stated publicly, echoing his sentiments during his time with McLaren. “Short and medium term. I don’t think there is anything that is impossible to fix.” He added that the team would focus on improvements before the Australian Grand Prix and in the early races of the season, acknowledging the urgency of the situation.

The situation at Aston Martin is particularly concerning given the team’s trajectory in 2025, where they showed significant improvement. However, the switch to Honda power units has brought a new set of challenges. Reports indicate that the team is already facing significant hurdles in adapting the Honda engine to their chassis, raising questions about their competitiveness this season.

Adding a personal dimension to the unfolding situation, Alonso’s partner, Melissa Jimenez, is expecting their first child in late March. The stress of the struggling partnership comes at a pivotal moment in Alonso’s personal life, potentially influencing his decision-making regarding his future in Formula 1.

While Alonso remains outwardly optimistic, the parallels to his previous experience with Honda are undeniable. He will need to decide whether to commit to another season of potentially battling reliability issues, or to consider retirement after a storied career. He has not yet publicly addressed his future plans, but the coming races will likely prove decisive.
