Mount Rushmore National Memorial, a monument to four U.S. Presidents carved into the granite of the Black Hills in South Dakota, is preparing for increased visitation this spring and summer. The National Park Service site, featuring the 60-foot faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, offers a range of experiences beyond the iconic sculpture.
Located 23 miles southwest of Rapid City on Highway 16, the memorial represents a tribute to the nation’s history and ideals of freedom and democracy. Visitors can explore the Sculptor’s Studio, where Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor, worked, and the Lincoln Borglum Museum, dedicated to his work. The Avenue of Flags, hiking trails, and Junior Ranger Programs for children are also available. The Evening Sculpture Lighting Ceremony remains a popular attraction.
The Black Hills region, where Mount Rushmore is situated, also includes Custer State Park, known for its roaming buffalo and scenic lakes, and the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial, a still-in-progress sculpture. The National Park Service notes that Mount Rushmore symbolizes national pride and an impressive feat of engineering, having stood since 1941.
For travelers considering a spring break trip to South Dakota, Mount Rushmore is a central destination. The park offers interpretive ranger-led activities and experiences designed to engage visitors with American history. Xanterra Travel Collection operates retail and restaurant facilities at the memorial, including opportunities to purchase refreshments like ice cream.
