Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has cautioned against excessive optimism despite his side’s recent resurgence, although highlighting the significant contribution of veteran midfielder Casemiro.
United, currently sixth in the Premier League, are firmly in contention for a Champions League qualifying spot following a run of form that has seen them drop points only once under Carrick’s leadership – a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on February 10th. A victory against Everton on Monday night would see the Red Devils leapfrog Chelsea into fourth place.
“It’s good that everyone’s asking that question,” Carrick said, responding to inquiries about the possibility of Champions League qualification. “It shows that we’ve put ourselves in a good position to start with. We’re not getting too carried away now all of a sudden after a few weeks. We know where we’re at, we’re in a good position. I’d still like to be in a better position, mind you, but we’re in a good position.” He added, “We’re positive, I think we should be. I think there’s a lot of good things to grab and look forward to. But then again, it’s up to us and putting it into play really. It’s possible, it’s up to us to take the opportunity.”
Carrick inherited a team in sixth place and has overseen a marked improvement in performances. Central to this upturn has been the form of Casemiro, who announced last month that he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Carrick praised the 33-year-old Brazilian’s impact, stating, “Cas has been fantastic since I came in, really, on and off the pitch. Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way.” He emphasized the importance of senior players setting an example, adding, “Being a senior player here there is almost the responsibility of [setting] the example, and helping the younger players, helping the rest of the boys, and passing on your experiences in a positive way.”
Carrick described Casemiro as “a pleasure to work with” and expressed his desire to continue collaborating with the midfielder for the remaining months of the season. “He’s been top since I came, in so many ways, and I look forward to continuing working with him for a few months yet.”
The Brazilian has formed a promising partnership with young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, a dynamic that Carrick believes is beneficial for the development of the academy graduate. Casemiro has likewise contributed five goals this season, adding a further dimension to his game.
Confirmation of Casemiro’s departure came after a standout performance in the Manchester derby, demonstrating his continued commitment to the club despite his impending exit. Carrick revealed that the announcement was made to provide clarity regarding Casemiro’s future, stating that the decision was made prior to his arrival as head coach.
