Kim Kardashian and Ray J: A Timeline of Their Tumultuous Relationship & Legal Battle

More than two decades after a sex tape propelled Kim Kardashian and Ray J into the public spotlight, the two are embroiled in a new legal battle. Ray J has accused Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, of involvement in racketeering, prompting a defamation lawsuit from Kardashian who fears the allegations could jeopardize her ambitions of becoming a lawyer.

The current dispute stems from Ray J’s claims, made in September 2025, that Kardashian and Jenner would be subject to a federal investigation, potentially involving RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) charges. He even suggested the case would be “worse than Diddy’s,” referencing the ongoing legal issues facing music mogul Sean Combs. Kardashian and Jenner swiftly responded with a defamation lawsuit filed in October 2025, asserting that Ray J’s accusations were baseless.

According to the lawsuit, Kardashian has “never been charged, indicted, or accused of any crime” and has not been contacted by any government agency regarding alleged criminal activity. She argues that Ray J’s statements are demonstrably false and damaging to her reputation, particularly as she pursues a legal career. Kardashian expressed concern that the allegations could impact her ability to pass the bar exam, citing the importance of “moral character” in the vetting process.

The legal clash revisits a complex history dating back to the early 2000s. Kardashian and Ray J began dating around 2002, with Kardashian initially working as a stylist and organizer for Ray J’s sister, Brandy. Their on-again, off-again relationship unfolded as both were rising in the Los Angeles celebrity scene – Kardashian as a stylist and socialite, and Ray J as an R&B artist and reality television personality.

During their relationship, the couple recorded a private sex tape in 2003 while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The tape, later titled “Kim Kardashian: Superstar,” became a source of significant controversy when it was leaked and distributed in 2007 by Vivid Entertainment. Kardashian subsequently filed a lawsuit against Vivid Entertainment, ultimately settling for a reported $5 million the same year “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” premiered.

While the tape was briefly acknowledged in the first season of the reality show, both Kardashian and Ray J remained largely silent about the footage for years. However, Ray J revisited the subject in 2013 with the release of the song “I Hit It First,” widely interpreted as a reference to the sex tape and a jab at Kardashian’s subsequent relationships.

In recent years, Ray J has publicly discussed the tape, alleging that its release was not a leak but rather a planned partnership involving Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner. He claimed in 2022 that the tape “has never been a leak. It’s always been a deal and a partnership between Kris Jenner and Kim and me and we’ve always been partners since the beginning of this thing.” He similarly stated that he “felt suicidal” watching the Kardashian family build an empire from what he perceived as a lie.

Ray J’s recent racketeering claims represent a significant escalation in the long-running dispute. Kardashian and Jenner, through their attorney Alex Spiro, strongly dispute Ray J’s narrative, and the defamation lawsuit seeks to hold him accountable for what they deem to be false and damaging accusations. The case is ongoing, with no immediate resolution in sight.
