Pregnant Woman & Newborn Die: Medical Negligence Alleged in Kerala Hospital

The death of a 29-year-old woman and her newborn at Government Taluk Hospital, Pattambi, in Kerala, India, has prompted allegations of medical negligence from her family, who are demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Noushija, wife of Nasar Basha from Thrithala, was admitted to the hospital on February 16, 2026, in preparation for childbirth. According to family members, her condition deteriorated rapidly on February 19, with the onset of heavy bleeding and breathing difficulties. Hospital staff subsequently recommended a transfer to Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, but the family opted to take her to a private hospital in Vaniyamkulam.

The family alleges that Noushija died en route to the private facility, but contend she had already succumbed to her condition while still at the Taluk Hospital on Friday, February 20th. A central claim revolves around a perceived delay in treatment, which the family attributes to the absence of an anaesthesiologist for a period of three days. They state that Noushija endured significant pain during this time.

Adding to the family’s distress, they claim hospital authorities have refused to release Noushija’s medical records, hindering their ability to understand the sequence of events and assess the care she received. The family’s allegations, reported by The Hindu, center on a failure to provide timely and adequate medical intervention.

As of Saturday, February 21st, hospital officials had not publicly responded to the specific allegations of negligence or the claim regarding the withholding of medical records. Local authorities have not yet announced whether a formal investigation has been launched into the incident.
