Premier League Predictions: Week 27 – Arsenal Wobble & North London Derby Preview

Tom Edozie, a 16-year-old forward who recently debuted with Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Arsenal on Wednesday, significantly impacting the Premier League title race. The goal, deflected off Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori, salvaged a 2-2 draw for Wolves at Molineux, leaving Arsenal just five points ahead of Manchester City.

The result halted Arsenal’s momentum, preventing them from establishing a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. Manchester City, crucially, have a game in hand, with a direct clash scheduled for April 18th at the Etihad Stadium. Edozie’s late intervention has injected renewed uncertainty into a title race previously leaning in Arsenal’s favour.

Wolves had fallen behind after goals from Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie, but Hugo Bueno’s strike reduced the deficit before Edozie’s decisive moment. The debutant was brought on by Wolves manager Rob Edwards with just six minutes remaining, and Edwards reportedly encouraged him to seize the opportunity. “He’s impressed us with some really nice moments, he’s technically a gifted player, but we’re still learning about him ourselves,” Edwards said, according to the BBC. “We just had a feeling and sometimes you have a feeling and then that gut is proved right.”

Edozie joined Wolves from the XYZ Football Academy in London, having signed his first professional contract in 2024. The academy focuses on supporting players who haven’t secured traditional scholarships, and has helped over 40 players transition into full-time professional football. Edozie is the brother of Southampton winger Sam Edozie.

The draw follows a recent pattern of unpredictable results in the Premier League this season, a trend highlighted by The Athletic’s predictions challenge. The challenge, now in its 27th week, saw all participants incorrectly predict an Arsenal win at Molineux. The Athletic noted that backing either Arsenal or Manchester City to win every game this season would have yielded correct predictions in 17 and 16 games respectively, a significantly lower rate than in the 2018-19 season when Manchester City and Liverpool were dominant.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated after the match. The Gunners had previously drawn with Brentford, failing to secure three points in both matches despite taking the lead. The team’s recent form – just two wins in their last seven league games – has raised concerns about their ability to maintain a title challenge.

Looking ahead, Tottenham Hotspur will host Arsenal in a North London derby this Sunday. Interim Tottenham coach Igor Tudor is expected to bring a renewed sense of intensity and organisation to the team, potentially making for a challenging encounter for Arsenal. The Athletic’s Oli says he’s predicting a scrap in midfield, loads of yellow cards, maybe a red card or two, VAR controversies, and perhaps Arsenal to shade it on a set piece.

Other Premier League fixtures this weekend include Aston Villa versus Leeds, Brentford versus Brighton, Chelsea versus Burnley, West Ham versus Bournemouth, Manchester City versus Newcastle, Crystal Palace versus Wolves, Nottingham Forest versus Liverpool, Sunderland versus Fulham, and Everton versus Manchester United.
