A new performance venue, Nam Theater (남극장), opened in Seoul’s trendy Sharoosu-gil district this month, combining live performance with dining in what is being described as a “dining immersive” experience. The theater’s inaugural production, “Restaurant,” a domestically produced immersive play, will initiate preview performances on February 26th, according to a press release.
Nam Theater aims to minimize the distinction between stage and audience, creating an environment where viewers are integrated into the narrative. The concept extends beyond traditional viewing, positioning the audience as participants within the artwork itself. Beyond performances, the space will function as a creative platform, hosting art salons, networking events, showcases and workshops.
“Restaurant,” produced by Company Yeonkyul (컴퍼니 연결), is set in a hotel restaurant with a 30-year history. The play centers on individuals whose relationships were fractured by a past critique from a food critic, as they are brought back together in the same location. The narrative unfolds as characters confront past choices and their present circumstances, all while sharing a meal. The audience will participate as “guests” within the restaurant setting, with the meal itself integrated into the flow of the play, rather than being a separate service.
The production is directed by Nam Seung-ju (남승주) of Company Yeonkyul, whose previous work, the play “JEJU,” received a four-star rating from official media at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The cast includes Kang Woo-ram, Im Young-joon, Seo Young, Im Dong-seop, Yoo Seong-hoon, Kim Gun-uk, Cho Jae-kyung, Kang Da-young, Yoon Jung-woo, Park Ji-yeon, Kim Tae-ui, and Cheon Seo-hyun.
The creative team includes artistic director Choi Mu-yeol, playwright Kim Won-hee, and designers Cheon Seo-hyun and Jang Hyun-il. Kim Hyo-jin and Jang Hyun-il are responsible for the menu, while Kim Ga-seong and Choi Hye-ji manage operations. Marketing and planning are being handled by Kim Su-mi.
Nam Theater is located at 1626-42 Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, on the 4th floor and rooftop. The theater’s Instagram account (@namtheater) announced a preview period running from February 26th to March 1st, with an official opening ceremony scheduled for March 2nd.
