Jade Ruyu Joins openDemocracy to Cover UK Tech & Society

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Investigative journalist Jade-Ruyu Yan has joined openDemocracy as its new tech reporting fellow, the organization announced this week. Yan will focus on the United Kingdom’s technology sector and its societal impact, a role created in collaboration with Tech Policy Press.

Yan brings experience from Project Brazen, where she worked as an open-source researcher and reporter, and Ad Age, where she covered corporate ethics. Her work has also appeared in publications including The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun-Times, and Crain’s Chicago Business. She currently operates a Substack publication, “PR Disaster,” focusing on corporate and governmental missteps.

According to her website, Yan’s reporting interests center on corporate influence. She is based in London and originates from Hong Kong. She is also a fellow with The Midas Project, an AI watchdog nonprofit, investigating the commercial viability of artificial intelligence projects.

Yan’s appointment comes as scrutiny of the UK’s technology sector intensifies. OpenDemocracy stated the fellowship was established to bolster coverage of the sector. Yan can be contacted via email at jade dot yan dot work at gmail dot com, and through LinkedIn.

Yan has indicated a willingness to mentor journalism interns and students facing difficulties, offering to connect via email. She is currently investigating topics including how venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz is shaping AI policy, and the recent circulation of a new strain of mpox.
