Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman has recently indicated a potential abrupt end to his Major League Baseball career, prompting an outpouring of respect from former teammates and rivals. The possibility of retirement surfaced in recent days, leading former Blue Jays players to publicly acknowledge Gausman’s impact.
Gausman, currently 35 years aged, has compiled a 112-113 win-loss record with a 3.81 earned run average over his 13-year MLB career, amassing 1,954 strikeouts. He has played for five different franchises: the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, and, most recently, the Toronto Blue Jays. He was selected by the Orioles with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft and debuted with the team in 2013.
The right-handed pitcher has been recognized as an All-Star twice, in 2021 and 2023, and was the American League strikeout leader in 2023. He has similarly been named to the All-MLB Second Team in both 2021 and 2023. Gausman attended LSU, where he earned All-American honors before beginning his professional career.
Prior to joining the Blue Jays in 2022, Gausman spent time with the Braves, Reds, and Giants. He began his career with the Orioles, where he played for five seasons. His collegiate career began at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado, where he demonstrated promise as a pitcher, achieving a 5-2 record with a 2.79 ERA in his sophomore year.
