Bangkok PM2.5 Levels: Today’s Air Quality & Health Alerts (Feb 20-21, 2024)

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Bangkok residents face worsening air quality as PM2.5 levels continue to exceed safe standards across the city, with 35 districts reporting levels that are considered to be starting to affect health, according to reports from Saturday morning.

Data released today indicates that 32 areas of Bangkok are experiencing PM2.5 concentrations in the orange category, prompting health advisories to wear masks when outdoors. The highest concentrations were recorded in the districts of Nong Khaem and Thawi Watthana, exceeding 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Twelve districts are experiencing the highest levels of PM2.5 pollution in the capital, according to TNN Thailand.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) previously urged employees to work from home on January 29th and 30th as pollution levels rose, a measure taken in response to similar hazardous air quality conditions. Recent reports indicate that the situation has not significantly improved, with pollution remaining a persistent concern.

The incoming surge in PM2.5 is heightening health concerns among residents. Authorities have warned that the current levels pose a risk, particularly to vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. The Nation Thailand reported earlier this week that Bangkok was warned to prepare for a further surge in PM2.5 pollution.

Air quality across all zones of Bangkok has deteriorated, with levels now considered hazardous. The situation is being closely monitored by environmental agencies, and further advisories are expected as the pollution persists.
