Central Florida Heatwave: Temperatures to Reach 88° This Week

Central Florida is bracing for a day of intense heat, with the National Weather Service issuing heat advisories for several counties. Temperatures are expected to reach 95°F in Orlando, 96°F in Kissimmee, and 93°F in Okeechobee on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

The rising temperatures are compounded by high humidity, pushing the heat index – what the temperature feels like to the human body – into dangerous territory. Forecasters warn the heat index could climb as high as 110 degrees in some areas, creating a “Major” level of HeatRisk, the third-highest of four levels, across East Central Florida, including Orlando, Kissimmee, and Leesburg.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Recommendations include staying hydrated, wearing light-colored clothing, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours. Symptoms of heat stroke, such as confusion and unconsciousness, require immediate medical attention.

The hazardous conditions extend beyond the heat. A moderate risk of rip currents is in effect along the Atlantic coast from Daytona Beach to Vero Beach, with waves breaking between 2 and 3 feet. Swimmers are advised to heed lifeguard instructions, avoid swimming far from shore, and be aware of posted flags indicating water conditions.

While the extreme heat is expected to persist through the weekend, updated advisories are possible by Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A cold front is expected to arrive after the weekend, bringing a significant drop in temperatures, but for now, Central Florida residents are being urged to prepare for potentially record-breaking heat.
